The Client has been taking various measures in preparation for the decommissioning of Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.
It was recently found that high-dose radioactive materials were stuck to the zeolite sandbags placed on the lowest levels of the buildings. At present, these sandbags are stored underwater, with the stagnant water acting as a radiation shield. Meanwhile, it is planned that the stagnant water will be treated/removed, and there are concerns over the effects of radiation when the floor surface is exposed.
The Client considers it necessary to have an innovative approach, or an approach that combines multiple technologies, in order to stabilize the sandbags containing high-dose radioactive materials. Given the remarkable advancement of technologies such as robotics designed for automated infrastructure maintenance, the Client has decided to seek globally a partner to work on this challenge.
